How to Keep Your Water Heater Running Efficiently

How to Keep Your Water Heater Running Efficiently

Water heaters are appliances that should last a long time. However, their longevity is Dependent on how well you take care of them. With that being said, the team at bluefrog Plumbing + Drain of North Dallas wants to share ways to keep your water heater running efficiently. These are easy, painless steps that will ensure maximum usage out of your water heater.
Keep an Eye on Your Water Heater’s Temperature
In more ways than one, adjusting the temperature of your water heater makes a difference to its long term health. Unfortunately, it can also impact your energy costs. Lower your water heater’s thermostat to at least 120 degrees, and know for every 10 degrees you lower the temperature, you will save five percent. That adds up!

If you’re going out of town this summer, make sure to turn your thermostat to the “vacation” or “away” mode to keep the pilot light on without heating the water. Additionally, test the temperature pressure relief valve once a year. You’ll want to check for any leaks when you discharge it.

Drain the Water Heater Tank and Check the Anode Rod
At the bottom of the water heater, pieces of sediment and debris build up over time. These can scratch the inside of the water heater and hinder the machine’s efficiency. More than once a year, you should drain a quarter of the tank to help clear out some of the debris. Attach a hose to the drain valve, switch off the cold water, and let the sediment water drain until it’s clear again. If a quarter is drained and the water still shows signs of debris, continue to let it run.

A crucial part of the water heater is the anode rod. This piece prevents the heater from rusting internally. To keep it and the machine in top shape, examine the anode rod every three years. If the rod is less than half an inch thick, is coated in calcium, or has more than six inches of steel wire exposed, it’s time to replace it. Fortunately, they’re an easy, inexpensive fix that you can perform yourself.
