How to Fix a Leaking Showerhead

How to Fix a Leaking Showerhead

When it comes to our bathroom fixtures, we want to be able to rely on them 24/7, especially our showerheads. Unfortunately, all fixtures age with time or break eventually. Leaks in shower heads are quite common, and they’re a hassle to deal with.

Fortunately, you can fix showerhead problems quickly to avoid wasting water and money. Here’s how to fix a leaking showerhead.
Shut Off the Water and Remove the Shower Head
Your first step is to shut off your home’s water supply. Because you’ll have to remove the showerhead, this step is necessary to avoid being drenched. Next, you’ll unscrew the showerhead, either by twisting it off or with the help of a tool if it’s stuck. A wrench or pair of pliers should do the trick.
Inspect the O-Ring and Clean the Showerhead
The O-ring, a circular rubber part of the fixture, is inside the showerhead. It attaches to the various threads when the head has been unscrewed. When this part of the showerhead breaks, it can cause leaks and may need to be replaced.

While the showerhead is inactive, it’s the perfect time to wash off any hard water or sediment buildups. TrueValue recommends boiling three cups of vinegar and water, then allowing the shower head to soak in the mixture for 20-30 minutes.

Tape the Showerhead
Once the shower head is clean and the O-ring has been checked, tape the attached threads to the stem of the pipe with Teflon tape. This will help prevent further leakage, as long as it’s not done too tightly. Attach the tape towards the end of the pipe stem in a thin layer.
Reattach and Turn on the Water!
You’re almost done! If you can see that the leak is no longer an issue, it’s time to reattach the showerhead. As you’re doing this, be careful to not screw it on too tightly. This could break the showerhead and cause further problems. Once that’s done, you can turn your home’s water supply back on and enjoy a fully functioning shower again!
